Red Dress Day, a day of National Awareness for the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Two-Spirit, and Gender Diverse People

Today, the HUCSC recognizes Red Dress Day, the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, Two-spirit, and gender-diversepeople. We remember Tina Fontaine, Loretta Saunders, Rinelle Harper, and the thousands of other MMIWG2S that have been murdered and gone missing. These incidents are a product of centuries-long violence and systemic racism against Indigenous peoples that continue to plague our society.

Please take a few minutes to read the final report of the National Inquiry Into MMIWG, which identified “persistent and deliberate Human and Indigenous rights violations” as the root of the violence against MMIWG2S. The report included 231 Calls for Justice directed at governments, institutions, industries social service providers, and all settlers. We have curated a short list of readings and films to help contextualize the report and its findings. These are available to students online or through Western Libraries.
