Guide to HUCSC’s Structure 

Huron University Students’ Council (HUCSC)

HUCSC is comprised of the Executive, the General Assembly, and the Hired Portfolios, with over 75 members serving every student at Huron College. HUCSC members advocate student issues, concerns and priorities to Huron administrators, faculty and staff on behalf of students. 

The HUCSC provides comprehensive social and academic events and programming, as well as services such as Clubs, Intramurals and The Beaver Dam. Additionally, HUCSC strives to provide meaningful involvement, volunteer and development opportunities for all students, as well as offer resources from textbook drives to Tax Clinics.

The Executives 

President

The official representative of HUCSC is responsible for providing the strategic direction of the council and overseeing each portfolio, as well as representing the student body to partners and stakeholders, including Huron's administration, various external student councils and societies, municipal, and more. 

VP Finance and Administration

Oversees HUCSC budgeting and effective management of all financial and corporate resources, such as the Beaver Dam, Clubs, and the HUCSC Merchandise.

VP Student Affairs

Responsible for recognizing, receiving, and advocating for academic, career, social, and cultural concerns on behalf of the student body, as well as publishing two policy papers per year to address student concerns. 

VP Events

Responsible for creating events for the student body to enhance the student experience. The events portfolio plans and executes various events on campus, such as Clubs Week, the annual Huron Ball, and social and academic mixers.

VP Communications

Works on all the branding and marketing strategies for the HUCSC, the management of all council social media platforms, and communicates HUCSC events, news, and resources to the student body.

The Speaker of The General Assembly

The Speaker of the General Assembly (GA) is an internally elected paid position. The Speaker is responsible for facilitating meetings by maintaining order, guiding discussions, and ensuring that all members of the GA have an equal opportunity to speak. They uphold the rules of procedure and help the assembly run smoothly and fairly by acting as a neutral third party. The speaker oversees the governance portfolio and trains incoming GA representatives on the ins and outs of their roles and responsibilities. 

The Hired Portfolio 

Two rounds of hiring occur per year: spring (end of the second semester, prior to summer) and fall (start of the first semester in the new year). Hiring processes and job descriptions are posted on the myhuron.ca website under “Student Opportunities” and promoted on our various social media platforms. 

Presidential:

  • Associate to the President: Assist the President with their daily tasks, which include but are not limited to preparing briefs, public relations, and providing feedback regarding problems facing the HUCSC at any given time. 

  • Executive Secretary: Record minutes of HUCSC GA meeting, weekly Executive Meetings, maintain the physical office space, and manage info@myhuron.ca email inbox. 

  • Deputy Secretary: Assist the Executive Secretary to carry out the logistical day-to-day tasks. 

  • Boris the Beaver Mascot: Attend Huron events, including O-Week, interact with students, and be available for photos in the mascot suit. 

Student Events: 

  • AVP Social Events: Assist VP Events with social events planning, budgeting and support the Coordinator  Commissioners to plan out details for their events. 

  • AVP Academic Events: Assist VP Events with academic events planning and budgeting, maintain contact with GA Reps and department clubs and coordinate at least one event within each department. 

  • Huron Ball and Graduation Banquet Coordinators (2): Plan and execute the Huron Ball  Graduation Banquet, liaising with administration, VP Communications and external vendors, as well as leading a committee of 5-10 leading up to the events. 

  • Fashion Show Coordinator: Plan and execute the Huron Fashion Show, coordinate meetings with a team of MUA, models, and designers leading up to the event. 

  • Frost Week Commissioner: Plan and execute Huron Frost Week. 

  • HK Relay for Life Chairs (2): Lead a committee of 15-25 to host HK Relay4Life events throughout the year and the overall relay hosted at King’s campus. This position also works directly with the Canadian Cancer Society, brainstorming, executing fundraising tactics, and planning events. 

Student Affairs: 

  • AVP Student Affairs: Assist the VP Student Affairs in day-to-day tasks, including Newsletter Updates, GA slides, Doodle Polls, as well as writing policy and advocacy reports. 

  • Wellness Associate: Communicating and collaborating with the Huron Wellness team, collecting feedback from the student body and creating mental health resources for students. 

  • Equity Associate: Conduct community consultations and external research on EDI initiatives, chair an EDI committee, develop equity educational programming for students, including workshops, panels, speakers, mixers, etc., and organize Conversation Circles. 

  • Student Feedback Coordinator: Write survey, focus group, and conversation circle questions and analyze qualitative and quantitative data used to write policy papers and reports, and present these reports to different stakeholders on campus. 

  • Academic Research Commissioner: Research and compile resources for academic support, and consult with department representatives to collect feedback. 

  • Student Opportunity Commissioner: Research and compile resources to develop new student extra-curricular pursuits, including volunteer work and community engagement. 

  • Equity Commissioner: Collect feedback from the student body on equity issues. And work on equity advocacy initiatives under the direction of the Equity Associate. 

  • Wellness Commissioner: Support Wellness Associate to plan events, create resources, and support other mental health advocacy initiatives. 

  • Sustainability Commissioner: Develop and organize sustainability initiatives at Huron. 

Finance:

  • Finance and Administration Associate: Assist the VP Finance for Beaver Dam operations, merchandise, budgeting, and club and association finances. 

  • Merchandise Associate: Oversee operations of HUCSC merchandise, including design, order processing, and e-commerce. 

  • Clubs Associate: Oversee the operation of the HUCSC clubs portfolio, complete mid and end-of-year reports, ensure club operations run smoothly, and facilitate Clubs Governance Committee meetings. 

  • Clubs Coordinator: Supports the operation of the HUCSC clubs portfolio by assisting with administrative and logistical tasks, including coordinating with club executives and the Clubs Associate. 

  • Beaver Dam Bartender: Assist the Beaver Dam manager in Beaver Dam operations, including opening and closing the Beaver Dam, serving food, drink, and merchandise. 

Communications: 

  • AVP Social Media: Drive social media campaigns and initiatives to boost HUCSC presence on campus, student engagement, and community outreach.

  • AVP Publications and Website: Lead the execution of digital publications, including the weekly newsletter, yearbook, website, blog, long-form feature content, and policy papers.

  • AVP Promotions: Lead outreach efforts, the Hype Team, promote events through video and photography, and foster a vibrant campus community.

  • Social Media Coordinator: Assist VP Communications and AVP Social Media to manage and execute social media strategies to enhance brand awareness, engage audiences, and drive traffic to digital platforms. 

  • Publication Coordinator: Assist in implementing a weekly HUCSC newsletter, a MyHuron blog, and an annual yearbook.

  • Beaver Dam Coordinator: Lead all promotion and social media content related to The Beaver Dam and follow an overarching branding and marketing strategy.

  • Website Coordinator: Responsible for updating and maintaining the HUCSC website to keep up with upcoming events and activities. 

  • Video Coordinator: Produce video content, including video content of events, day-to-day Huron content, and planned segments/initiatives. 

  • Photographers (3): Take primary charge of photography content for the HUCSC and report to the AVP Promotions to coordinate events which require photographs. 

  • Hype Team Members (9): Act as a liaison between the council and student body and work to increase engagement with the Huron community.

Governance/Speaker Portfolio:

  • Governance Coordinator: Work with the Governance Committee to consult on policy and governance matters. Ensures that polices are current and up to date

  • Chief Returning Officer: Responsible for overseeing and administering the student council’s election processes to ensure they run fairly, transparently, and in accordance with council policies. 

  • Deputy Returning Officer: Responsible for assisting the CRO in administering HUCSC elections. 

  • Deputy Speaker: Assist the Speaker with various administrative and meeting-related tasks. 

The General Assembly

The General Assembly (GA) is comprised of both voting and non-voting resource members. Collectively, the GA represents the student body through passing motions regarding HUCSC policies and operations. Members provide direction and insight on HUCSC initiatives, meet with students and faculty to address students’ needs, and sit on standing committees.

Members of the GA sit on standing committees, which guide HUCSC's decision-making. These standing committees include: Clubs Governance Committee, Elections Committee, Finance Standing Committee, Governance Standing Committee, Disciplinary Committee, and Advocacy Committee. 

In addition to these committees, GA members meet monthly on Sunday during General Assembly Meetings. GA Meetings are open to the public unless otherwise stated. To ensure transparency and accountability, meeting minutes can be found on the myhuron.ca website, under “My Reps”.
